First Christmas as a minimalist
The first Christmas as a minimalist was not easy at all, I wanna be 100% honest, it wasn't easy. Gifting obviously is the hardest part of it, I like to give gifts and I tend to receive gifts too. This year, I was trying to give the most useful gifts to relatives, friends, possible, so gave either useful things (mainly gadgets), they are definitely going to use or food/delicatessen, you can’t make mistakes in it.
This winter I was using a wishlist to make sure I avoid getting any kind of useless things, my closed family circle knows the best gift to give me if they really want to, is buying me shares in particular companies I’m interested in. Everyone should focus on assets instead of liabilities in life. I think it is something valuable and I definitely would be glad to receive that type of gift.
Regards my family, I was keep on asking them what would they prefer to buy and I can contribute to, it’s important so we can all avoid giving unwanted gifts. My mother and dad wanted to receive new phones as theirs got old. Suprisingly my dad didn’t even have a smart phone before.
My dad is definitely a conscious person, same just like me, he knew what he wanted, he decided he want to change his phone for a smart phone mainly for working purposes, to check his emails, participate in WhatsApp chats, to check his rota at work, wanted to be able to make pictures, listen to music and language courses/ radio on his phone and sometimes to watch a bit of Netflix.
He has chosen a relatively cheap Xiaomi phone, RedMi Note 6 Pro (£219.00) and he said he would be happy if I could contribute to the purchase of this phone, also wanted a case as he tends to drop/break them easily (one of the reason why he never turned to smartphones before and a headset to the phone, so I found it more than reasonable and was happy to finance this for Christmas for him.
In the other hand, my mum just wanted to change her phone cause her previous phone’s screen was too small for her (she had my previous Iphone 5S) and also wanted a new phone and not a second hand, preferably an Iphone as her other devices are also Apple and she was satisfied with it. My dad and me purchased her an Iphone Xr with lots of space (128GB) as she loves to make pictures and videos, creating memories. Since she has the phone she can’t stop using all those funny emojis and creating pictures with them on Messenger. She loves the screen as she can see it better (yes, they are getting old like everyone else). In overall she is happy with the device and she got jealous of my wireless phone charger so I purchased her one as well.
Well as I declared to my parents/family previously that I don’t need nothing in particular, if they wish to present me something than they better to purchase me shares or send me money what I can use to purchase more shares. I received from my family a small amount of money what I immediately invested in the stock market and also a fun gift from my parents even though I didn’t ask for it. I got a knife set from them, a professional and super sharp set of knifes as they know, mines were crap quality and not sharp enough and they also know that I’m gonna have very good use of them as I love cooking and I’m gonna use them every single day.
Plus my mum was just being my mum by buying me a little Christmas tree. Back in Hungary we used to have a huge live Christmas tree and we used to decorate it together before Christmas eve as a family program, but in London we didn’t really purchase those big live trees anymore although we always had a small one. It didn’t stop my mum this year to buy a live lovely Christmas tree and she and my dad also decorated it for me. That was a real surprise, but I loved it and also the fresh smell of the tree was so refreshing and was such a festive addition to my studio flat.
Minimalist Christmas with a minimalist Christmas tree.
Minimalist Christmas Tree, I loved this gift.
I can’t miss the professional knife set. I loved that gift too, I’m already using it on daily basis and I have to tell everyone who loves cooking like myself, buy a good set of knifes, they are really that good and they are really gonna make your daily life easier and essential for every little chefs.
Yeah and look at that fancy cevlar holder, almost like a professional assassin…

Well, I have to admit my Christmas wasn’t that minimalist when it comes to eating or wasn’t that minimalist like most people imagine but I tried to give as functional gifts as possible (not just to my parents but also to other family members and friends) as possible.
I think the goal is to embrace minimalism by realizing the importance of conscious decisions, decisions we make on daily basis. The goal is to set up a guideline to ourselves, we don’t have to become a hermit. As a message to all the ‘wannabe’ minimalists out there, enjoy life, keep on embracing a minimalist lifestyle, don’t let yourself to get lost in social media, I limited the social media in my life, this was one of the reason I disappeared in the festive season for couple of weeks, I hope you guys, you had an amazing Christmas and festive period among your loved ones.
Your sincerely
